Viable Cities is a Strategic Innovation Programme that has the primary goal of contributing to research and innovation in the area of smart sustainable cities, as part of efforts to achieve Swedish energy and climate goals and provide a stronger foundation for sustainable growth.
Viable Cities aims to ensure that information and communication technology (ICT) and digitalisation play a key role in accelerating the transition to sustainable urban energy systems.
Viable Cities is a catalyst for new forms of collaboration between cities, business, academia, research institutes and civil society, helping to develop and utilise innovation and knowledge for smart sustainable cities.
The time frame for Viable Cities is 2017–2029 and the first stage, from 2017 until 2020, is now under way, with support from Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency, which is also the supervising authority.
