Research and Innovation projects

Here we gather ongoing research and innovation projects. All projects have been granted funds under Viable Cities’ first call, with the exception of Sharing Cities Sweden. To find a particular project, press CONTROL + F and type any of the words that should be in the text.

Activity based energy and mobility modeling for future cities

The project will use smart digital technologies to collect data on mobility and activities of citizens. This data will be combined with eg weather and location data in a city model. The model will calculate and visualize energy and power requirements as well as carbon emissions in the city as a basis for city planning. More info here. 

DDS Energy efficient healthcare

The project will develop digital solutions enabling analysis of energy consumption both in health care and in property operations. The purpose is to identify and visualize potential för improved energy use. More info here.

Digitally operated urban agriculture in industrial areas

In this project, the City of Stockholm and partners will pilot innovative urban agriculture systems growing fruit and vegetables in the industrial areas close to the city. These agriculture systems are expected to have a positive environmental impact as well as potential for citizen engagement and employment opportunities for newly arrived. More info here.

Urban planning for energy efficient cities

The project will develop a dynamic visualisation tool for more efficient urban planning. By visualising and communicating consequences of urban planning for the energy system, this tool will provide an improved basis for decision making. The tool is developed in consultation with the municipality of Kiruna and will potentially be very useful given the large scale transformation the city is facing. More info here.

Threat modeling and attack simulation of viable cities

Increased digitalisation make cities more vulnerable to cyber attacks. In order to face these types of threats, we need to be capable of identifying vulnerabilities. This project is a first step towards creating a tool enabling modeling of threats and simulation of attacks in cities. More info here.

Sustainable urban lifestyles through nudging and citizen engagement

The project will explore how urban planning can promote sustainable urban lifestyles. The focus is on knowledge about citizen engagement and nudging as strategies for enabling a more sustainable everyday life. More info here.

Climate challenge Uppsala

Climate challenge Uppsala will accelerate climate transition and enable more sustainable choices in everyday life for people living in Uppsala. The project will engage and inform people in Uppsala in different ways regarding how to decrease their carbon footprint. More info here.

Charge, Store, Link – Large scale testbed for energy prosumers

The project will explore the possibility of establishing a large scale testbed to enable citizens to produce and share energy services peer to peer. Citizens will also be able to deliver renewable electricity or smoothening of power fluctuation to the grid. The project is connected to the test bed for the sharing economy established within the national programme Sharing Cities Sweden. More info here. 

MERiT – Sustainable and efficient mobility at work

Pilot projects will be carried out using a digital platform for combined mobility (Mobility-as-a-Service) in three administration offices in the City of Gothenburg with approximately 10 000 employees. The purpose of this study is to assess how such services can make traveling at work more sustainable, attractive to users and easy to administrate.  More info here.

Mo-Bo – Architecture for sustainable mobility

Mo-Bo is a concept for housing where mobility services enable transports for inhabitants that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. The sharing economy and mobility services are paving the way for innovative architecture where more people and goods can be transported by fewer vehicles, which enables smarter use of resources and space. Measures for efficient use of building spaces and energy

The project will explore how digitalisation can impact upon demand and supply of heated surface in the built environment, through the introduction of services for sharing space. It will also explore how new ways of measuring energy use based on activity rather than per square meter. The focus is on the city district of Rosengård in the city of Malmö as a basis for a full scale test bed. More info here.

SAMIR – Coordinated infrastructure for smart and sustainable small cities

The project will explore needs for and limitations in small municipalities using smart solutions for coordinated infrastructure. In the cities of Herrljunga and Kungälv the project will explore possibilities of using the local fiber networks as a backbone for the digitalisation of water, sewage, and electricity, but also other municipal/regional operations such as lighting, parking, and public transit. Sensors for air quality – opportunities and limitations

Sensors for measuring air quality, with particle focus, are used for controlling eg indoor ventilation and for providing info about outdoor air quality to the public. This project aims at improving the quality of measurement data regarding sensors for airborne particles for enabling increased service to unprotected people in urban traffic and more efficient ventilation in buildings. Sharing Cities Sweden

Sharing Cities Sweden is a national programme for the sharing economy in cities. The programme aims to put Sweden on the map as a country that actively and critically works with the sharing economy in cities. Test-beds for the sharing economy in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Umeå will develop digital solutions/platforms. The test beds are supported by a national node for national and international cooperation and to promote an exchange of experience in sharing cities. More info here.

R:energi – Local renewable energy solution in Röstånga

The project will contribute to making the village of Röstånga a ”renewable energy plus location”. Knowledge and a good basis for decision support regarding energy system solutions will be developed for the housing environment R:ekobyn with 30 households. This is done with a view to replicability and adaptation to other local conditions. More info here.

Smart and climate aware food store for the consumers of tomorrow

The project will explore how to nudge more people into consuming food in ways that are smarter for the environment and for our climate. The aim is to understand how environment related information about different food products, combined with smart approaches (nudging) can shift consumer behaviours. More info here.

Smart Village – self supporting energy systems in future neighborhoods

The Smart Village concept aims at building the neighborhood of the future with a high degree of self sufficiency in energy. The aim of the project is to push the limits for development of a modern area and provide opportunities for more sustainable lifestyles with emissions close to zero whilst creating new opportunities for social community. Small scale energy supply through solar power

The project will explore the conditions for establishing a demonstration project for flexible energy systems based on solar power, local storage and controllable loads in the new city district of Brunnshöf in the municipality of Lund. More info here.

Urban ICT Arena –  4 helix environment for sustainable energy

The project will explore the conditions for establishing the test bed of Urban ICT Arena in Kista as a so called quadruple helix environment, with collaboration between academia, industry, public sector and civil society. With a focus on the connection to the local civil society, the project will address the energy challenge to accelerate the transition to a sustainable city. More info here.

Value creation through open data from the ectogrid™ energy system

The project will create conditions for companies, civil society organisations, research and public organisations, to create value from open data from the ectogrid™ energy system. By making ectogrid™data available,  digitalisation and citizen involvement can contribute to optimisation of the energy system, eg through balancing loads and sources of power. More info here.

3De – Energy challenges from three-dimensional property subdivision

The project will shorten connections between research and practice in working with three-dimensional property subdivision (3D) to encompass more owners and functions in a single building. This entails both possibilities and challenges for energy optimisation (e). In three different cases of city district development, the project aims at bringing together researchers, professionals who on the one handset specifications and on the other hand those who work with implementation.
